Mabamba Swamp shoebill tracking is one of the best places in the world to see the rare Shoebill Stork in its natural habitat. Located on the shores of Lake Victoria, this internationally recognized wetland offers an unforgettable birdwatching experience for nature lovers, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
Every year, hundreds of visitors travel to Uganda specifically to track the iconic Shoebill. Their visits have increased awareness of the bird’s declining population and the importance of conserving the Mabamba wetland and other habitats where the species survives.
Besides the Shoebill, Mabamba Swamp is home to more than 200 bird species, making it one of Uganda’s premier birding destinations. The wetland also supports unique wildlife, including the elusive Sitatunga antelope, which is specially adapted to life in swampy environments.
Like many wetlands around the world, Mabamba faces challenges from habitat loss caused by human settlement and land reclamation. In the past, local fishermen considered seeing a Shoebill before fishing to be a bad omen, and some birds and eggs were lost due to these beliefs. Today, conservation efforts, community education, and the designation of Mabamba as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance have helped protect both the birds and their habitat.
Tourism has played a major role in conservation. Many local fishermen now earn income by operating boats for visitors, while others have been trained as experienced birding guides. As a result, the Shoebill has become a valuable symbol of sustainable tourism and community conservation.

Mabamba Shoebill Tracking Experience
Birding trips are available every day and typically last about four hours. Full-day birdwatching excursions can also be arranged upon request. The best birding season is from September to March, when migratory birds from Europe join the resident species, creating an even richer birding experience.
For the best experience, we recommend booking your trip at least one day in advance. Our guide or driver will pick you up early in the morning from your hotel or residence before transferring you to Mabamba Swamp.
