Planning a Uganda Gorilla Safari in 2026–2027: Complete Guide
Planning a Uganda gorilla safari in 2026 or 2028? A successful gorilla safari requires more than simply buying a gorilla permit and arriving in Uganda.
You’ll need to choose the right trekking destination, select a suitable gorilla trekking sector, arrange accommodation, plan transportation, prepare for challenging forest conditions and decide whether to combine your gorilla trek with other Ugandan wildlife experiences.
This guide explains how to plan a Uganda gorilla safari for 2026–2027, including when to go, where to trek, how to book permits, what the experience is like and how to build the ideal itinerary.
Why should you plan a Uganda Gorilla Safari for 2026–2027?
Uganda is one of only three (03) countries where travellers can experience mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Uganda’s two gorilla destinations are:
- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Bwindi is the more extensive and popular destination and contains four principal trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.
Mgahinga is located within the Virunga Mountains and offers a more private and exclusive gorilla trekking experience.
For travellers planning, 2026–2027 is an excellent period to start researching and reserving a safari because the most important decisions—particularly your trekking date, sector and accommodation—should be coordinated rather than arranged separately.
Places to Go: Gorilla Trekking in Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is Uganda’s flagship gorilla trekking destination. The park covers approximately 321 square kilometres and occupies a mountainous landscape in southwestern Uganda. We like to describe Bwindi as home to approximately half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
Where in Bwindi does Gorilla Trekking Happen?
All gorilla permits are linked to a designated trekking entry point, so choose your sector before finalising your accommodation. UWA’s tracking guidelines state that permits are booked by date and designated entry point.
Below are the four (04) designated gorilla trekking entry points you can choose from:
Buhoma Sector
Located in northern Bwindi, Buhoma is the historic gorilla trekking area and has a well-developed tourism infrastructure.
It can be particularly convenient when combining gorilla trekking with Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Ishasha sector.
Ruhija Sector
Ruhija lies on the eastern side of Bwindi and is especially attractive to travellers interested in birdwatching and forest hiking.
Rushaga Sector
Rushaga is located in southern Bwindi and is particularly important for travellers interested in the Gorilla Habituation Experience.
It can also work well for itineraries entering southwestern Uganda from Rwanda.
Nkuringo Sector
Nkuringo is located in southwestern Bwindi and is known for its mountainous landscape and spectacular scenery.
It is an excellent option for travellers who enjoy hiking and want a more adventurous trekking experience.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga offers an alternative to Bwindi. The park forms part of the larger Virunga landscape and is located in southwestern Uganda near the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Unlike Bwindi, Mgahinga has only 08 gorilla permits each day and offers a different experience from the denser forests of Bwindi.
Mgahinga can be particularly attractive if you want to combine gorilla trekking with Golden monkey trekking or other activities around Kisoro and the Virunga Mountains.
How Much Does Gorilla Trekking Cost in 2026–2027?
This is one of the most important questions when planning a Uganda gorilla safari. Do not rely on old permit prices when budgeting for a 2026–2027 trip.
UWA’s published 2026 – 2027 tariffs and conservation fees can change, so travellers should confirm the applicable tariff for their exact travel dates before making final payment…It’s at this point that Tata Africa Safaris helps you plan your Uganda gorilla Safari.
For those planning a Uganda Gorilla Safari in 2027 – 2028, please consider the latest UWA tariff that will take effect on 01 January 2027.
Decide where to start your trip: Entebbe, Kampala or Kigali.
You have several practical options.
Option A — Start in Entebbe/Kampala
This works particularly well if Uganda is your main destination and you are booked on a multi-day package.
Otherwise, a typical Uganda-routed safari could follow this pattern:
Entebbe → Lake Mburo → Bwindi → Queen Elizabeth → Kibale → Entebbe
This allows you to combine mountain gorilla trekking with:
- Chimpanzee trekking.
- Wildlife safaris.
- Boat cruises.
- Savannah wildlife.
- Birdwatching.
- Cultural experiences.
Option B — Start in Kigali
This can be an excellent option for travellers flying into Rwanda.
A possible route:
Kigali → Bwindi → Queen Elizabeth → Kibale → Entebbe
For travellers targeting southern Bwindi(Rushaga or the Nkuringo sectors), the Kigali route can also make logistical sense.
How many days should i spend on a Uganda gorilla Safari?
We wouldn’t recommend flying all the way to Uganda for only one night around Bwindi.
Here is a few recommendations:
3 Days — Gorilla-focused Trip:
Day 1: Kigali/Entebbe → Bwindi
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Day 3: Bwindi → Kigali/Entebbe
Good for travellers with limited time, and/or those who just realised their already booked Kenyan or Tanzanian safari happens just next to Uganda.
4 Days — Better option
Day 1: Arrival/transfer to Bwindi
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
Day 3: Cultural or nature experience
Day 4: Return journey
8 Days — Classic Uganda primate & wildlife safari
Day 1: Entebbe
Day 2: Entebbe → Kibale
Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking
Day 4: Kibale → Queen Elizabeth
Day 5: Queen Elizabeth safari/boat cruise
Day 6: Queen Elizabeth → Bwindi
Day 7: Gorilla trekking
Day 8: Return to Entebbe.
For someone visiting Uganda for the first time, 8–10 days gives you much more opportunity to experience the country rather than simply ticking off gorillas.
Budget for more than just the Gorilla Permit
A common mistake most travellers planning a Uganda Gorilla safari make is seeing the price of the gorilla permit, US$800 and assuming that is the price of a Uganda gorilla safari… No. It isn’t.
For example, a private Uganda Gorilla Safari package with Tata Africa Safaris includes:
Gorilla permit fees + accommodation + meals + vehicle hire fees + driver-guide fees + transfer fees + park activities fees + airport transfer fees.
… and the final price on your quote depends heavily on:
- Number of travellers.
- Lodge category.
- Number of safari days.
- Starting point.
- Vehicle type.
- Season.
- Additional parks.
- Private vs shared arrangements.
For a couple or small group, travelling together can substantially reduce the per-person vehicle and guiding cost.
Additional Gorilla safari costs worth considering:
- Tips and gratuities while on safari.
- Porter fees on the day of your trek.
What to pack for a Uganda Gorilla Safari?
For your trip to Bwindi or Mgahinga, we recommend that you focus on buying or packing the practical trekking gear rather than expensive safari clothing.
Trust me, Gorilla trekking is no fashion show…but rather a physically demanding experience of a lifetime.
